Andrea Fernández (@AndreaF1992) Yuma Kagiyama (JPN) took the Youth Olympic title with a top-notch routine in the free skating, jumping from third to the first place. Andrei Mozalev (RUS), with two fantastic performances, earned the silver as Daniil Samsonov (RUS) achieved the bronze with his expressive and touching skating. January 13th, 2020 The fight for the gold medal in the Men's event was so thrilling and the difference between the two first skaters in the ranking was only 1,23 points. Yuma Kagiyama became the second straight Japanese men to win the Youth Olympic Games after Sota Yamamoto in Lillehammer 2016. He had to vault two spots after the short segment but his excellent routine in the free skating was enough to edge the Russian skaters. Andrei Mozalev (RUS) delivered a fantastic program in the short portion and landed two incredible quads in the free segment but he finished second after some struggles with the triple Axeles. Anyway he was the first Russian male skater to conquer a silver at the Youth Olympics after two bronzes in the last editions. His teammate Daniil Samsonov (RUS) showed his beautiful and also confident skills on the ice to take home the bronze. For the first time in the Men's field at this competition there was two Russian skaters on the podium. Yuma Kagiyama (JPN) stood in the third place after the short program with 72,76 points. His flowing routine to Piano Concerto “Fate” from “Soho Crime” started with a triple loop and a triple Axel that seemed effortless. In the second half, he completed a nice triple Lutz and went for the combination but his double toe was so close to the boards and he fell and hit the safety fence. He recovered to continue his routine, collecting all level fours for the spins and a level three for the footwork. He vaulted to the first place in the free program with a succesful and enjoyable routine to “Tucker” soundtrack by Joe Jackson. He opened with a strong quad toe, a nice triple loop and a wonderful quad toe-double toe combination. His only glitch was a downgraded euler in the combination triple Axel-euler-double Salchow. In the second portion he nailed a fantastic trple flip-triple toe combination, a triple Lutz and an easily landed triple Axel. He picked up all level fours for the spins and the step sequence to secure the first place in the segment. He obtained 166,41 points, a new personal record, and totaled 239,17 points to jump to the top of the podium. Andrei Mozalev (RUS) took the lead in the short segment with an emotional and almost flawless routine to “Juno and Avos” rock opera. He struggled with the first jump, a triple loop, but then aced a triple Axel and the combination triple Lutz-triple toe in the second part. He also collected a level four for the footwork and two spins and racked up 79,72 points. In the free skating, the Russian skater hit two quad toes, one of them in combination with triple toe, in his powerful program to “Step up” soundtrack. He also landed a great triple loop, a confident triple Lutz-euler-triple Salchow and a nice triple flip but he fell on the first triple Axel and wobbled on the second in combination with double toe. All of his spins got a level four as the footwork was rated a level three. He finished second in the free portion at 158,22 points and slipped to the second place overall with 237,94 points. Daniil Samsonov (RUS) delivered a tender routine to “Rain, in your black eyes” by Ezio Bosso. He crashed on a double Axel instead of the planned triple but he bounced back to nail a fantastic triple loop and a great triple Lutz-triple toe combination in the second half. All of his spins and the expressive step sequence merited a level four and he stayed second with 76,62 points. In the free skating, the 14-year-old touched with a mellow program to “Per te”, performed by Josh Groban. He hit a triple flip-euler-triple Salchow, a triple flip-triple toe and a triple Lutz-double toe (with an unclear edge on the Lutz) in the second half and produced all level-four spins and footwork. However his quad Lutz was called underrotated and he fell on a sketchy triple Axel and he also singled the first Axel and doubled a Lutz, missing some valuable points. He was third in the free segment at 138,59 points and remained third overall with a total score of 215,21 points.
